Waacking: Empowerment Through Dance and Music

Waacking is a style of dance that originated in the LGBTQ+ clubs of Los Angeles in the 1970s. It is a freestyle dance characterized by rapid arm movements, fluid wrist and hand movements, and dramatic poses. Waacking was popularized by dancers such as Tyrone Proctor and Shabba-Doo, and was often performed to disco and funk music.

Waacking draws influences from a variety of sources, including martial arts, ballet, and traditional African dance. It became known for its expression of individuality and inclusivity, as it was popularized by LGBTQ+ people of color in the underground dance scene.

In the 1980s, waacking gained further exposure through music videos and films such as "Flashdance" and "Breakin'". It has since continued to evolve and is now practiced all over the world.

Today, waacking remains an important part of dance culture, both as a form of self-expression and as a means of building community. It continues to be embraced by dancers of all backgrounds and is celebrated for its unique style and history.
